Everyone loves a love story, and Helena and Mick’s story is the loveliest of all. Helena (100) and Mick (103) live together at TriCare Cypress Gardens Aged Care Residence in Gold Coast. They have just celebrated their 81st wedding anniversary and were gracious enough to share their story and words of wisdom with us!

Helena and Mick were neighbours in Duaringa but met at the post office, a common place to meet people at that time. “Local dances in the halls were a great meeting spot for everyone and were great fun. I was seventeen when I went to Mick’s 21st birthday party and got to know him better.” Said Helena. “We were both shy in the beginning, and I believe Mick made the first move in our relationship,” Helena said, smiling. “We had been going out together for a while before Mick visited me at my dad’s house. He asked for my father’s permission and proposed. I said yes straight away!”

Helena and Mick lived in various places but settled in Tanby, where they purchased a pineapple farm. There, they had two daughters, four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. “When you love someone, things go smoother and time flies by. We are a small family, very happy and close to one another,” Helena explained.

They have celebrated every milestone of their marriage, including big parties on their 50th, 60th, 70th and 75th wedding anniversary. This year they had a beautiful party at Cypress Gardens Aged Care Residence to celebrate their 81st anniversary and Helena’s big 100 birthday. Family, friends and residents gathered together on this very special date.

As a final word of advice on how to keep the marriage alive and happy for so long, Helena says, “Just be open and honest with one another. You will love each other so much that the only thing you worry about is who goes first. We have had a great life, full of happy memories.”

Helena and Mick’s story inspires our TriCare team, and we wish them many more celebrations together.
